Flyash or flue ash is a coal combustion product that is composed of the particulates (fine particles of burned fuel) that are driven out of coal-fired boilers together with the flue gases.

Flyash bricks is made of fly ash, water, quicklime or lime sludge, cement, aluminum powder and gypsum.

Flyash bricks are lighter and stronger than clay bricks(red bricks). As fly ash bricks attains high strength, no breakage or wastage during transportation and usage.  Fly ash bricks are machine made bricks. Since fly ash bricks are uniform size of bricks, mortar required for joints and plaster reduces comparatively.

Advantages of flyash bricks

  1. Fly ash bricks reduces dead load on structures due to light weight.
  2. Cost efficient compared to clay bricks.
  3. Easily available even during rainy seasons.
  4. Same number of bricks will cover more area than clay bricks.
  5. Because of high quality, basically no breakage during transport and use.
  6. Due to uniform size of bricks mortar required for joints and plaster reduces.
  7. These bricks do not require soaking in water for 24 hours. Sprinkling of water before use is enough.
  8. Due to lower water penetration seepage of water through bricks is considerably reduced.
  9. High fire Insulation.

Disadvantages of flyash bricks

  1. Not all types of fly ash bricks are good for construction, only those produced in power plants usually compatible with concrete .
  2. Its very important to use high quality fly ash.
  3.  Limitation of size.

Comparison of fly ash bricks and clay bricks(red bricks)

  1. Fly ash bricks are always made using machine molds therefore they are uniform in size whereas clay bricks are hand made and uneven in size.
  2. Fly ash bricks are lighter than clay bricks.
  3. Comparatively no wastage while using fly ash bricks.
  4. Cost of fly ash brick is less than cost of clay bricks.
  5. They can absorb more vibration then clay bricks.

Final verdict

Fly ash bricks are also said to be cement bricks which are widely used in construction as a replacement for red clay bricks.

It is cheaper and available all seasons at standard cost.
